First off, I ended up watching the prelim streams live on facebook and the quality was very good. There was not one fight that stood out as being note worthy, although the Njokuani fight SHOULD have been stopped in the 1st rd. Regardless of the fighter still standing. Just sitting there getting kneed and punched for over a min should be enough for a stoppage
The spike prelims were different. Both explosive and fast.
Dos Anjos Koed Sots quickly. It was one of those exchanges where whoever landed clean first was going to win and Dos Anjos made it happen. Strange to see George rise as fast as he did to lose his last 2 and this one by serious KO, but that is this sport. Unlike boxing where guys can go undefeated for 20-50 fights, losing in this sport is inevitable. 4 oz gloves are not forgiving and one mistake or slip can be the end. I think this is why GSP fights so conservative.
Melvin VS Roller: I saw a KO coming from when they signed this match up. I know how hard Melvin hits and it seems like he has the right coaches to bring out the best in him. Roller is VERY tough, but it seems to me needs to learn how to set up his shot to get the fight to the ground and this fight made it apparent.
Condit VS Stun Gun: Condit looked very sharp. Hit a nice sweep, back to his feet. Throws a switch flying knee which landed clean. Ive seen Condit fight a bunch and he didint seem consistent when I first saw him fight(Years before the UFC), but now seems to have his rhythm.
Ortiz Vs Bader: Earlier I was trying to point out in this sport anything can happen and this fight proved it. Tito hasnt won a fight in a LONG time and the betting odds were high that this was going to be his last fight. Ill be honest, I thought so as well. I saw Bader as tito 2.0. When picking fights I try to think through each aspect and each fighters strengths and weaknesses. The one thing that CANNOT be figured in is the "any given sunday " factor. If they were to fight 9 more times, would it be the same outcome all 9? No, I do not think so, but it didnt matter. Last night was Tito's time and we will see what happens in his next fight.
Siver Vs Wiman: Im not going to lie, I am REALLY biased in this fight. Im glad Siver won, but was really hoping for a BRUTAL KO. This fight was competitive though. Wiman stormed out of the cage when he was not declared the winner which is in line with his personality. Now, if I wasnt Biased, Im not sure who won. I do know that Siver had better attacks standing and great takedown defense. Wiman won Rd 2 obviously, but Bias or not, I think Siver won rd 1 and 3
Leben Vs Wand: Sadly, this fight went exactly how I thought it would(although I did NOT think it would be that fast). Match up wise, this HAD to end in KO. Lebens chin is still intact and Wands is not. It was sad to see an Icon of this sport go down like that, but in all honesty, its time for Wand to retire.
Cruz VS Faber: This also went exactly how I thought. Cruz used his foot work and angles to defeat Faber. there were some slick scrambles and it was a good fight. I do NOT think Faber won(he thinks so though). In my opinion, he got 1 solid knockdown(to which Cruz was right back up) and another which was more of a slip(which cruz got Immediately up from as well). I hope Cruz gets more of the respect he deserves. Its strange how Faber seemed to be the choice to market when Cruz was the champ.
