I shouldnt be writing this because future opponents may think this is giving them some insight into fighting me, but I need to say it. I have a serious deficiency in my game when it comes fight time. I hesitate with using my stand up. I train all aspects of the game and in the room, Im very comfortable with boxing or kickboxing. In fact, I enjoy doing it and feel I can hold my own with anyone on the feet. Unfortunately, when it comes to the actual fight, I revert back to my grappling too much. Now, my grappling game is great. I have a high finishing ration and Im very strong there. Ive just been having an issue "pulling the trigger" in my stand up.

My fight yesterday is a perfect example. I threw maybe 2 punches standing and went for the takedown. Now, I outclassed the guy on the ground and won. I just feel I could have beat him standing as well. Now, I realize I should stick with my strong points. Its just I should be using ALL of my strong points.

Im going to sit down with my stand up coach today and figure out what I need to do to remedy the problem. Ill compete in boxing and kickboxing if that will help. Although I wont stop grappling, Ill focus more on stand up(although I already spend a good amount of time doing that) if that will help as well. All I know is I want the total package in my fight game and I dont think Im ready for any of the big shows until I fix that deficiency. So, its back to work for me. Always growing and getting better.

That is probably the best thing you can do for yourself bro. No doubt you have some excellent ground skills, and I don't doubt you have good stand up skills as well. What it sounds like to me, and this is just speculation, but what it sounds like to me is, come time to "put up or shut up" your sub concience is second guessing your stand up ability thus making your revert back to your bread and butter. Putting yourself through a few boxing matches AND kickboxing matches will do wonders for your confidence, both conciencely and sub. I know several fighters that had the same struggle, and when they did exactly what you said you should try, it helped them out greatly. I agree with Ann, a win is a win, no matter how it comes, but if you feel you need to do something, do it. You are only capable of doing what you allow yourself to do. What the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.

I am sure you will figure it all out, but if not, you can't really argue with a win. ;)
