No sports have a clear cut winner each time. There are always favorites and on occasion the "under dog" will pull off a HUGE UPSET. Its a rarity in boxing or kickboxing, but it does happen. Now, in MMA, it happens a lot more often than any other sport, especially combat sports. I like to call it the ANY GIVEN SUNDAY FACTOR.
Fans and those who watch dont understand everything that goes into the actual fight. they also will never understand that if you are not 100% in any facet(mental, physical, preparation). It changes the dynamic of the fight.
Many matches that have happened fall into the any given sunday factor. Randleman KO's Cro Crop, Sokoudjou KO's Little Minotoro, Kevin Burns Submits Roan Carnerio and the one that always gets brought up Serra KO's GSP. I could keep going on and on.
Im not saying that the winners of these bouts arent good fighters. Im not. Its just that they werent "supposed" to win. The betting lines in vegas will back that up for me. They won when the odds were against them and they won big.
I dont believe that luck comes into play in a fight. Things happen and in MMA if your not 100% on and your opponent is, if you make one error of judgement, one slip up. Well, you might be taking a loss that you normally wouldnt. I know a ton of great fighters who have lost because "it just wasnt their day"
Ive been involved in this sport for a while. Im usually pretty accurate at picking fights and understand skill sets/ match ups very well. I still cant take into account Any given day.
This makes MMA a great sport and that what if factor always leaves room for a HUGE upset. with 4oz gloves and so many different ways of winning and THEN add on any given day? Good luck staying undefeated. And again, this is what makes MMA a great sport.
