Sweet bro. I expect a first round sub via RNC. make him think he has a chance then WHAM lock it up! HAHA, good luck bro.
Gabe what do you think about women in MMA?
Hi Gabe,
Read the "confession." As you know I've never considered fighting so I'm purely a fan of the game so forgive my ignorance as I ask this: At this point in MMA, there are still fighters that have a strength and stick to it and do really well. It seems like the best example is GSP. Where he's really good is passing and then ground and pound. Sure, he's got a decent stand up game (when his opponent is Matt Hughes) and like you, he can "hang" with anyone... but he knows not to rely on his standup with guys like Penn, Fitch, Kos, nor even Serra. What separates Pierre from fighters like Penn and Thales Leites and Lister is St. Pierre's wrestling. St. Pierre was even taking Fitch and Kos down.
When black belts like Penn or Nick Diaz or JZ or Shaolin Ribiero get people down so they have TOP position, they absolutely dominate! But, those guys' wrestling just isn't good enough for them to take people down at will; sometimes they do, but I would argue not as efficiently as Pierre.
In the next 2-3 years are you trying to win matches by KO? In your note, you were thinking of putting total focus on your stand up, but why? As you said, you can hang with anyone at this point (maybe the mental part of the standup can be improved with your coaches so you'll pull the trigger in a match) but why not focus where you're phenomenally good and where you get your W's. Why not hone your wrestling so you can take guys down 75% of the time you attempt it?
I still remember when the Claremont guys and I went to see your match with Young. first few rounds you were standing with him. Then in the 3rd round you shot the double, passed his guard, took the mount, and finished him! Coming from a jiu jitsu and wrestling background, that was a dream to watch jiu jitsu being applied fluidly like that. When you had Melvin down you were overwhelming him! I haven't seen your matches with Olaf, Maxwell, or Max Son but I presume you took them down, passed guard, and finished. Or like your last match with that one hand guillotine from top!
So I guess my summary questions to this ESSAY relate to your goals:
Is it purely to win (if so why not hone the wrestling so your game ends up being similar to St. Pierre (great top-position game, and average standup)?
OR Is it to become a fighter with sick standup and win with the standup (like Diaz or Jorge Gurgel (both are fundamentally BJJ guys who now prefer their feet)?
Thanks and looking forward to your next fights!
Fuj
